'For Our Elders' NAIDOC Resource and 'Guide for Respectfully Communicating with Elders'

Common Ground and Jordyn Green

Description

Elders are highly respected people in First Nations communities and are recognised by their communities for their wisdom, cultural knowledge, and community care and service.

To celebrate this year's NAIDOC theme – 'For Our Elders' – Common Ground and I have created an educational resource about Elders.

Elders have many important roles, and often hold authority and decision-making power in our families and communities. This year’s theme is about honouring, celebrating and paying respect to our Elders and their unwavering strength. Those who we’ve lost and those who are still with us continuing to advocate for justice.

The resource is designed to give students opportunities to learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders and community leaders from around Australia, as well as those within your local community.

Linking to the F-6 (Primary School) Australian Curriculum, the resource can be used at any time of year, in 2023 and beyond. We have provided examples for how early childhood educators and secondary teachers can modify the activities in this resource to suit younger and older students.

The resource includes a guide for respectfully communicating with Elders.
